The Kospi's closing level on the last trading day of November 2026, as published by the Korea Exchange, is above 6,000.
Korea's Stock Market Fell 7.6% in a Day Because Two Chipmakers Make Up Half of It
How far each Asia-Pacific benchmark fell on 15 October. Korea, where two memory makers dominate the index1, fell furthest2.

Fall on the day, percent, as reported by the Associated Press.
South Korea's benchmark Kospi fell 7.6% on 15 October, two sessions after a 7.4% fall. It closed at 5,554.22 as Samsung Electronics fell 9.5% and SK hynix 11.1%2,3. Losses passed 8% at midday, which halted trading for 20 minutes under the exchange's circuit-breaker rule4. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 4.9% and Taiwan's Taiex 3.4%2.
US inflation set off the selling, but it fell hardest on two memory makers. US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September, up from 3.4% in August5, and traders briefly priced a 50% chance of a Federal Reserve rate rise this month6. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix make up roughly half of the Kospi1, and foreign investors sold a net 3.62 trillion won of Korean shares, their eighth straight session of net selling7.
At stake is whether this is a repricing of the AI chip trade or a rate scare that fades. On the same day TSMC reported a record quarterly profit that beat estimates8, and a week earlier Samsung guided to third-quarter operating profit of about 107.40 trillion won9. Korea's financial regulator met in emergency session but announced no new measure10. The next tests are the Bank of Korea's decision on 22 October11 and the Fed's meeting on 27 and 28 October6.
Market and investment risk is elevated but cyclical; earnings risk is low on the reported numbers, and no row reaches high because nothing structural has changed.
MarketMediumTwo falls of more than 7% in three sessions, and a circuit breaker.
The Kospi fell as much as 9.29% during the session, triggering the 10th circuit breaker on the index this year12. Over seven sessions since 6 October the index has lost 21%, per The Hankyoreh13. The level is medium rather than high because the escalation test finds no structural change: the won and Korean government bonds stayed calm12.
Monetary policyMediumRates are rising in both Washington and Seoul.
The Fed raised its target range to 3.75% to 4% on 16 September14,15, and September consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier5. The Bank of Korea's Base Rate is 3.00% after back-to-back rises16, and President Lee Jae Myung has said a near-term rise is close to certain, per Reuters11.
EarningsLowThe reported numbers are strong; the doubt is about how long they last.
TSMC reported a record quarterly profit that beat estimates on 15 October8. Samsung guided to third-quarter operating profit of about 107.40 trillion won, against 12.17 trillion won a year earlier9. Analysts in Seoul trace the selling to doubts about returns on AI spending and how it is financed, not to falling chip sales12,7.
RegulatoryMediumSeoul is watching debt-funded retail buying and promises a firm line on manipulation.
The Financial Services Commission (FSC) held an emergency review, said it would respond firmly to price manipulation and illegal short selling, and told lenders to avoid indiscriminate credit10. Regulators had already curbed single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in July17.
InvestmentMediumThe Korean index is a concentrated bet on AI memory demand.
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix make up roughly half of the Kospi1. Foreign investors have been net sellers for eight sessions7, and J.P. Morgan's Korea strategist says the market is struggling to find a new buyer now that the two companies' buyback programmes have run their course12.
Expect high volatility through the two central bank decisions in late October; a recovery and a range-bound market are about equally likely by the end of November.
Confidence on mechanism: medium. The day's record shows what moved the market: a US inflation reading, a semiconductor sell-off in New York and foreign selling in Seoul12,7. It does not show which of interest rates, AI funding doubts or Chinese memory competition carried the most weight, and analysts in Seoul name all three7. Confidence on horizon: low. The index has swung by double digits within weeks more than once this year13,18, and two central bank decisions fall inside the window.

The Kospi's closing level on the last trading day of November 2026, as published by the Korea Exchange, is between 5,000 and 6,000.
The Kospi's closing level on the last trading day of November 2026, as published by the Korea Exchange, is below 5,000.
The first two outcomes are close enough to treat as co-equal. A recovery needs foreign buying to return and the Fed to hold; a range-bound market needs only the current uncertainty to persist. A further fall is the smaller risk and would most likely follow a cut in memory-chip guidance rather than another inflation print.

The Bank of Korea's Monetary Policy Board raises the Base Rate above 3.00% at its October meeting, as published on bok.or.kr.
The Federal Open Market Committee raises the federal funds target range above 3.75% to 4% at its October meeting, as published in its statement on federalreserve.gov.
The Korea Exchange triggers another circuit breaker on the Kospi, as reported by the exchange or by Yonhap.
- Korea Exchange daily trading by investor type, every session, for whether the foreign net-selling streak ends7.
- Bank of Korea Monetary Policy Board decision, on bok.or.kr on 22 October11.
- Federal Reserve statement, on federalreserve.gov after the 27 and 28 October meeting6.
- US consumer price index for October, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on 10 November19, for whether energy keeps driving the headline rate5.
- Samsung Electronics and SK hynix full third-quarter results and guidance, on the companies' newsrooms when published, for any change in memory pricing or high-bandwidth memory orders.
- FSC press releases, as issued, for any stabilisation measure beyond the 15 October review10.
What moved on 15 October was prices and trading rules, not policy: an automatic halt, heavy foreign selling and a calm currency.
The operational record is a market event. Sell-side curbs on program trading, known locally as sidecars, were triggered at 9:07 a.m. on the Kospi and 9:12 a.m. on the junior Kosdaq7. A first-level circuit breaker followed at 12:38 p.m., when the Kospi was down 8% from the previous close4. Of 917 traded issues, 789 declined12. Foreign investors sold a net 3.62 trillion won ($2.7 billion) of shares7.
The currency and bond markets did not join the sell-off. The won ended at 1,344.6 per dollar, 0.17% weaker than the previous close, and Korean government bond yields fell as money moved out of shares12. In Tokyo, the yield on the 10-year Japanese government bond briefly fell to 2.91%6. That pattern fits investors cutting equity risk rather than a broad flight from Korean assets.
Reviewed, not acted on. The FSC's emergency meeting produced warnings and a commitment to use contingency plans if needed, not a new measure10. Circuit breakers and sidecars are automatic exchange rules4; their use is not a policy decision. The sources reviewed report no Bank of Korea action on the day.

A record run in Korean chip stocks has given way to three months of sharp swings, and this week's two falls came between a US inflation print and two central bank decisions.
Shin Hyun-song
Governor, Bank of KoreaLeads a central bank that raised its Base Rate to 3.00% in August16. On 13 October he said policy would stay restrictive and declined to say whether rates would rise at the 22 October review, per Reuters11. A day earlier he apologised for failing to warn investors about single-stock leveraged ETFs17.
What to watch
- The Base Rate decision and his press conference on 22 October
- Any comment on stock-market stability or the won
Lee Eok-won
Chairman, Financial Services Commission, South KoreaChaired the 15 October emergency review with the Financial Supervisory Service, the Korea Exchange and other agencies21. Warned against investing on excessive debt and told financial firms to avoid indiscriminate lending, per the Seoul Economic Daily10.
What to watch
- Any contingency measure, such as limits on margin lending or short selling
- Enforcement actions on market manipulation
The inflation shock, the end of AI chip demand, a Korean financial crisis and an official rescue are all larger in the coverage than in the record.
- A broad inflation shock. The headline rate rose to 3.7%, but gasoline rose 9.1% in the month and accounted for over half of the monthly increase. The annual rate was only slightly above the 3.6% economists expected, per The Hankyoreh13. Prices excluding food and energy rose 0.3% in September, the same as in August, and 2.6% over the year5.
- A collapse in AI chip demand. Nothing in the day's record shows one. TSMC reported a record profit that beat estimates the same day8, and the Associated Press reported the company saying AI demand remains very strong2. The doubts analysts cite are about returns on AI spending and how it is financed12,7.
- A Korean financial crisis. Equity selling was heavy, but the won moved 0.17% and government bond yields fell12. That is a stock market sell-off, not a run on the currency.
- An official rescue. The FSC reviewed conditions and warned against debt-funded investing; the reports of the meeting describe no stabilisation fund, short-selling ban or other new measure10,21.
- A crash as a long-run verdict. After its fall, the Nikkei 225 is still up 35% over the past year6. The Kospi has lost 21% in seven sessions13, yet its close was the lowest only since 7 April12. As late as 7 July the index was up 82% for the year18.
Korea's index has become a concentrated bet on AI memory demand, so global funds cutting AI exposure sell Seoul first, whatever the cause.
Concentration turns a sector view into a country view. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix make up roughly half of the Kospi1. In July an eToro analyst put their combined weight at around half, up from about a quarter at the end of 202522. A fund that cuts AI hardware exposure therefore sells Korea, and Korea falls further than markets with the same news but a broader index, as Japan and Taiwan did on 15 October2.
Rates matter through valuations, not through chip orders. Longer-term US yields have risen on inflation fed by the energy shock from the Iran war2. The 10-year Treasury yield was 5.09% early on 15 October after briefly passing 5.32% the day before2. Higher yields cut what investors will pay today for profits expected years ahead, which hits the most highly valued AI stocks first. In Seoul the pressure is doubled: Korean consumer prices rose 2.9% in September, above the Bank of Korea's 2% target11.
In (South) Korea, the AI cycle really swamps the negative effect from the Middle East. But for inflation, of course, they combine,
Reuters (via KFGO)11
Positioning explains the speed. Foreign investors have sold for eight straight sessions7. J.P. Morgan's head of Korea equity strategy said the market is struggling to find a new buyer now that the Samsung and SK hynix buyback programmes have run their course12. The Korea JoongAng Daily quotes an office worker who borrowed to buy chip stocks and can no longer cover the loan7; that is the risk the regulator's warning on credit addresses10.
The key issue is a possible mismatch between market’s growth expectations for the tech sector and what may eventuate,
Memory makers and Japanese AI-linked stocks carry the most exposure; Korean government bonds gained as money left shares.

In Tokyo, Advantest was down more than 15% at midday and SoftBank Group more than 10%6. In Taipei, TSMC lost 2.01% while ASE Technology fell by the maximum daily limit of 10%, and foreign institutional investors sold a net NT$302.56 billion of Taiwanese shares23.
Treat the sell-off as a valuation and positioning event until earnings or memory prices say otherwise, and plan for wide swings through late October.
| Reader | What to do |
|---|---|
| Private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) firms | Check how portfolio valuations and exit plans depend on listed AI hardware multiples, especially Korean and Japanese comparables. A pending listing or fundraising tied to AI infrastructure may face a weaker window through the October central bank meetings. |
| Family offices | Separate exposure to the Korean index from exposure to Korean companies: an index allocation is roughly half a bet on two memory makers1. Decide in advance what would justify adding, such as an end to foreign net selling, rather than reacting to single sessions. |
| Corporates | Memory buyers should not read the share prices as a change in supply: the reported earnings and guidance point to tight markets8,9. Watch contract memory prices and supplier guidance instead. |
| Law firms | Advise clients trading Korean shares on the FSC's stated zero-tolerance stance on manipulation and illegal short selling during the volatility10, and on the rules for single-stock leveraged ETFs17. |
The useful questions test how much of a counterparty's position depends on AI hardware valuations and borrowed money.
- Concentration. What share of your Korean or Asian equity exposure sits in Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and their suppliers? Does an index fund count as diversified exposure in your reporting?
- Funding. Are any positions financed with margin loans, ETFs that use borrowed money, or credit lines that can be called in a falling market? At what price levels?
- Earnings against price. Which assumptions in your AI hardware valuations depend on capital spending by cloud companies continuing at its current pace? What happens to them if one large buyer slows orders?
- Competition. How does your memory-sector view treat new supply from China's CXMT3?
- Rates. How do your valuations respond to a further Fed rate rise in October, or to a 10-year Treasury yield back above 5.3%2?
- Currency. For foreign investors in Korea, are won hedges sized for a move larger than the 0.17% seen on 15 October12?
This is most likely a rate- and positioning-driven repricing of AI chip valuations, made deeper in Korea by concentration, not evidence that chip demand is turning.
Confidence: medium. The day's facts are well documented and corroborated across Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, Australian and international outlets, with exchange-reported figures matching across the Associated Press, Reuters and the Korea JoongAng Daily2,12,7. The inflation data come from the BLS release itself5, and the policy positions from the Fed, the Bank of Korea and the FSC14,16,10. What is uncertain is the mix of causes, which no single source settles.
Primary assessment. The fall reflects a higher discount rate and crowded positioning in AI hardware, amplified in Korea because two stocks make up roughly half of the index1. The same-day earnings record does not show weaker demand8,9. We expect wide swings through the Bank of Korea and Fed decisions. By the end of November the index is more likely to stay below its early-October level than to recover it or to collapse.
The strongest alternative reading. Markets often turn before earnings do. Analysts in Seoul point to doubts about AI funding, citing a slowdown in Anthropic's revenue growth and distress in CoreWeave's bonds, and to new memory supply from CXMT7,3. In that reading the price fall is an early warning that orders from cloud companies will slow and memory prices will follow, and today's record profits are the peak. Mirae Asset's head of research rejects this for now, calling the fall excessive relative to earnings7.
Where we diverge from consensus. Most coverage leads with the inflation report. The September rise was driven mainly by gasoline, with prices excluding food and energy steady5. For Korea, index concentration and foreign positioning explain more of the size of the fall than the inflation data does.
- What would make this call wrong: Samsung or SK hynix cutting guidance or reporting lower memory prices in their full third-quarter results.
- A cloud company announcing lower AI capital spending for 2027.
- A second consecutive month of rising prices excluding food and energy in the October consumer price index19.
- On the other side, an end to foreign net selling and a Fed hold on 28 October would point to a faster recovery than we expect.
Korea's circuit breakers are automatic and have fired repeatedly this year, and the chipmakers' profits have grown faster than almost any comparison can show.
How the halt works. A first-level circuit breaker is triggered on the Kospi or Kosdaq when the index falls at least 8% from the previous close and stays there for one minute. All trading then stops for 20 minutes, only cancellations are accepted, and trading resumes through a 10-minute single-price auction4. Sidecars are a lighter tool that pause program selling7.
The July precedent. The Kospi set a record close of 9,114.55 on 22 June18. It then fell 7.89% on 2 July20 and triggered a circuit breaker on 7 July18. In the first half of the year, foreign investors sold 148.3 trillion won of Korean shares, about 87% of it in Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, per The Korea Herald20. On 28 July the index fell 10.84%, more than in either of this week's falls13.

What the Bank of Korea is weighing. It raised rates in July and August to bring the Base Rate to 3.00%16. Korean inflation was 2.9% in September, above the 2% target11. A further rise would support the won and narrow the gap with US rates, which President Lee has cited as a reason to act11. It would also add pressure to a stock market already under strain.
